Rock Solid Recap: Sluggish Series Victory

Rockies 4, Padres 2

Was it pretty?

Not at all.

Should we care it was ugly?

A little, but not too much.

Will we take it?

No question.

A week ago I would have said 4-2 would be a super way to start season. However, after seeing the action play out before me, I think we should be thrilled the Rockies are 3-3.

True a couple hits here or there could have put the Rockies at 4-2 or even 5-1, but without the solid pitching from Ubaldo Jimenez, it could have just as easily been 1-5.

I don't think we're seeing a sign of things to come in the 2010 season, they just aren't clicking on all cylinders yet. In fact, the only cylinder working expertly right now is the pitching. Most of that goodness centering around the expected guys -- Jimenez, De La Rosa, Betancourt and Morales.

The offense has done a nice job early in games, as they've scored first in each game this season, but the inability to add on late has cost the team a couple games and made others very interesting.

Defensively. Eh. The downgrade from Todd Helton and Clint Barmes to Jason Giambi to Melvin Mora is immeasurable. It just seems to drag the entire defense down when those two are paired together on the right side. Because of that, I will strongly encourage Jim Tracy to avoid giving Helton and Barmes simulteanous days off going forward.

Official Scorer

Where I award wins, losses and saves as I see fit.  Hence the winning player label.  Pitchers aren't always the reason a game goes the way it goes.

Winning Player: Ubaldo Jimenez

He's the man. Not his sharpest or most efficient performance, but damn sure good enough to get it done today.

Save: Franklin Morales

Let's be real here. Morales is a dominant pitcher waiting to happen. It's just a matter of him putting it all together in his mind. The arm is golden -- trust me on this. Hearing a percentage of Rockies fans ragging on him and wanting him to be traded drives me nuts. He's going to be frustrating at times, no doubt it. But my God folks, he's worth it. We're lucky to have him!

Off day tomorrow. Back in action Tuesday as the Mets come to town. Looking forward to seeing what their team looks like.

I am afraid I didn't see today's game, so this may be more speculation than ever. With that said, I'd like to add a few things:
Hawpe is awesome. He proved it Saturday with a couple dingers. The rest seem to be average right now. But I expect it to get better as time goes on.
Corrections: Ubaldo is now 2-0 and this is Morales' 2nd save.

We still have over 150 games to go, as the baseball season is a marathon. It's better if we were 6-0 right now, but as long as the Rox will continue to improve, we should end up with a winning record and playoffs come October.

No no. I'm aware of Ubaldo's record and Franklin's saves. I just award wins and saves a little differently than Major League Baseball. I'll make to explain that a little better going forward.

Thanks for the input.
