Running Thoughts: Hammel vs. Haren

It's Dante Bichette Night at Coors Field!  Let's win one for Dante!  Or just win one because winning is better than losing!

Hey look... that's Larry Walker!  Nice surprise for all the folks out at the ballpark tonight.

Rockies go with the same lineup as yesterday.  No arguments there.

Arizona will have Justin Upton despite his fouling a ball off his leg last night.  Dammit.

1st Inning
  • Two out trouble for Hammel.  Retired Johnson and Drew quickly, walked Upton, and now Reynolds rips a single.
  • Another small strikezone.  Bleh.
  • Hammel grooves a fastball to Laroche and it's 3-0.  Awful pitch selection since he was ahead of Upton 1-2.
  • Hammel up over 30 pitches.  Dan Haren taking the mound now.  Could be a long long night.
  • Rockies strike back quickly on a CarGo lead-off bomb to center.  Not many balls get hit that hard off Haren.
  • Tulowitzki hustles his ass off, as usual, by taking an extra base off a small bobble by Chris Young.  In scoring position with two outs.
  • Seth Smith down on strikes.  So let's all now pray Dan Haren doesn't settle in for several innings.
  • Diamondbacks 3, Rockies 1
2nd Inning
  • Let's also pray Jason Hammel got the disaster inning out of his system and can keep the team afloat.
  • Arizona gets the run right back with a Snyder double, Haren moves him to third, Kelly Johnson sac fly.  Just good,  fundamental baseball by Arizona.
  • Jason Hammel has zilch working for him. A Drew double and Upton single get another quick run on the board.
  • Doubleheader Saturday, De La Rosa only goes five yesterday thanks to the bone bruise.  Looks like Hammel takes one of the chin tonight for the good of the team.
  • Haren strikes out the side.  Uh. Oh.
  • Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 1
3rd Inning
  • Hammel finally gets on track with a 1-2-3 inning.  Now would be a good time for the offense to catch fire.
  • CarGo draws his first walk of the season.   Gonzalez also swipes a bag, but is left stranded.  Haren is pretty locked in.
4th Inning
  • Manny Corpas takes over for Jason Hammel.  Well... OK then.  Hammel must be dinged.
  • Corpas with a solid inning.
  • Haren pumping strikes and overmatching the Rockies his second time through the order.  Up to 7 Ks.
5th Inning
  • Mr. Corpas strikes out the side himself.  He's REALLY doing a fantastic job as a long reliever.  I can't get over that.
  • Haren: 8 Ks..  Moving right along.
6th Inning
  • Manny Corpas: Three beautiful innings with 4 Ks.  He's kept the team within striking distance.
  • Fowler walks leading off.  Come on boys... let's get to that bullpen.
  • That led to nothing.  9Ks for Haren.
7th Inning
  • Joe Beimel to the hill for the 7th.  Anyone who sees Manny Corpas walking the streets of Denver should give him a big hug.  Not really... but you know what I mean.
  • Beimel has a good inning.  Yay for the bullpen!
  • Now, can we get into their bullpen?
  • Please?
  • No?
  • F***!
8th Inning
  • Multiple innings for Joe Beimel?  That might be odd.
  • Two scoreless innings for Beimel.  Feel free to give him a hug, too.
  • It's a strained groin for Hammel.  Tremendous.
  • Young EY rakes a double over the RF's head.  Damn.  He's come up swinging.
  • Instant offense.  Gonzalez singles home Young.
  • Spilborghs hits for Fowler.  Didn't work.  6-4-3 ends the inning.
  • Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 2
9th Inning
  • Randy Flores: Come on down!
  • So here we go to bottom 9.  It'll be Chad Qualls.  Chad Qualls not real good.  I have a bad feeling he will be tonight.
  • Qualls strikes out the side around a couple walks and an Ian Stewart RBI single.
  • Final: Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 3
  • Recap up in a bit.

I also met Dante and I echo what Blake said. Really nice guy. Really down to earth.
