Rock Solid Recap: Aaron Cook is alive... and the Dodgers stink

That would be the simplest way to recap Wednesday's win, but I'll go a little further.

Rockies 3, Dodgers 1 (boxscore)

I'll never argue with a win under any circumstances,.and I'll give credit to Aaron Cook where it's due. He threw ball well, got about a dozen groundouts and didn't kill himself with the base on balls. That's how the gameplan has always been drawn up for Aaron. When executed (especially against punch less offense) he succeeds and sometimes even dominates like this one.

Breaking: The Rockies have extended pitcher Aaron Cook's contract through the year 2018.

Only kidding. Dan O'Dowd hasn't gone that far off the deep end yet. And if he was really smart, I think about the sixth inning he should have sent out a mass email to every other GM letting them know what was going on and emphasizing his asking price for Aaron was still pay for his airfare and we'll call it even.

Three more positives

1. Troy Tulowitzki: A three hit night for Troy. Two of those with two outs and RISP. Productive at-bats to be sure, but more so encouraging to me because he wasn't afraid to work a count and was actually seemed focused on going back up the middle. Good to see.

Maybe that dugout conversation he had with Carney Lansford the night before that everyone joked about actually made a difference for Troy. Maybe not. But it's possible.

2. Dexter Fowler: Dex is playing like a pro this time around. Sure he's had his share of rough at-bats and a couple baserunning mishaps, but he's also getting on base and creating runs with his legs. The ninth inning was a great example of that when he singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on Tulo's hit. That's exactly what you want from Fowler and that is what the Rockies desperately need out of Fowler.

3. Rex Brothers: Closer of the future. You can sense the future is getting closer and closer. If the Dan O'Dowd could find a suitor for Huston Street before Sunday, he'd be wise to explore it. This team needs whatever prospects they can gather and needs to scale back the payroll to improve this offseason. Huston is one of the few trade chips I think can make that happen.

Granted, Street hasn't helped his trade value of late. He hasn't been sharp since the All-Star break and maybe a little before, which fits into his pattern this season. Great April. Up and down May. Really solid June. Undesirable July.

At this point my Huston Street annoyance level is about 5 out of 10 right now. I think that's pretty fair given his overall success throughout his entire with Rockies tenure with recent maddening inconsistency factored in. Of course everyone else's scale starts at like 8 and is now approaching 50, but we all see things differently.

Overall

Very thankful the Rockies didn't get swept in this series. I mean, it's impossible enough to lose a series to Los Angeles, but to get swept could have rivaled any low point in franchise history (possible exaggeration). So we have that to hang our hat on. Plus, we get a day off Thursday, so that's an extra 24 hours to feel good about our baseball fandom!
