Not only are the Rockies stacking up victories... 5 in a row
They're stacking up some long balls as well... Smith-to-CarGo-to-Spilborghs.
That makes 16 dingers in their last 9 games.
And hey, they're stacking up the whoppers and tacos for Rockies fans as well.
Rockies 8, Diamondbacks 2
Winning Player: Seth Smith
This is a retroactive Winning Player selection. He deserved it last night for hitting two bombs with the flu. He deserves it even more today for extending the lead from 4-2 to 6-2... while even sicker than he was last night.
I don't know where he found the strength, but I can appreciate the energy it must take just to get out of bed feeling that awful. Hopefully he feels better tomorrow night.
Or maybe we shouldn't hope he feels better?
Troy Tulowitzki unconsciously bombed another one out in the first inning. He received a great deal of consideration for WP today as well. A good weekend against vs. LA and he may just have to settle for NL Player of the Week.
I think I know which would mean more to him.
Jason Hammel was excellent for five innings today. His disaster inning then came in the 6th after he walked a pair with one out. You know the drill with walks. Two bloop singles and an HBP later, Hammel was in the dugout clinging to a W.
Matt Daley (memba him?), Randy Flores, Rafael Betancourt, Joe Beimel, Matt Belisle, Esmil Rogers, and the aforementioned trio of HR hitters made sure he got it.
If Hammel can ever find a way to avoid those cluster innings to work deeper in games, he'll be a solid 3/4 starter for a number of years. As is, he's a very solid #5 with decent, but unspectacular upside. I'm still glad he's on our side.
Chris Iannetta rejoined the lineup but posted another hitless game. I know it'll be right back to the bench for him again tomorrow after the last two days off. It's great he hit .350 with 21 RBI at AAA, but he's just never going to get a rhythm going playing two times a week in the bigs. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.
But hey, we're in celebration mode after sweeping the Diamondbacks out of Coors Field. We'll worry about that situation and the Dodgers when they get to town tomorrow.
Enjoy the Whoppers and Tacos.
