Rock Solid Recrap: Offense Disappears As Rockies Find Yet Another Way To Lose

Braves 1, Rockies 0 (boxscore)

What Went Wrong: Thursday afternoon was a replay of Wednesday night, only with the Rockies finding a more creative way to lose.

Yes, they again lost 1-0 on an unearned run, making them the first team since the Kansas City Royals on July 23 & 24 of 1987 to lose back-to-back games without allowing an earned run, and this time the error was Jhoulys Chacin completely whiffing on a simple throw back from Wilin Rosario, allowing Juan Francisco to hustle home from third.

Watch and cringe:

Offensively, Tim Hudson shut the Rockies out for seven innings, allowing six hits and two walks. Three of those six hits belong to Charlie Blackmon, who also added a fourth in the 9th. Good afternoon for him, but he had no assistance whatsoever.

Turning Point: See, watch and cringe.

Rock Solid Recrap: If You Like Offense, Look Away Right Now

Braves 1, Rockies 0 (boxscore)

What Went Wrong: Well, the first thing would probably be the Rockies going hitless against Mike Minor until Jordan Pacheco's single leading off the 7th inning. That's obviously a discouraging occurrence for an offense. The second thing would be only adding one more hit after the first hit. Of course they did draw six walks in the game, which is on the plus side, but they couldn't put enough of those together to create one or two measly runs.

On the flip side, Colorado's pitching staff would combine to allow seven walks, which is a disturbing number.  Amazingly, Atlanta only turned that into one run because they also struggled to come up with hits (only four). So basically this was a slow, ugly, and at times difficult to watch baseball game, and the end result didn't make it worthwhile.

Turning Point: As unappealing as it was, this was still an evenly played game throughout. The only play that separated them was Josh Rutledge's 4th inning throwing error as he attempted to turn a rally-killing double play. Rutledge's throw sailed wide of Jordan Pacheco and ended up hitting the fencing in front of the first base dugout. This allowed Chipper Jones to stroll home with the lone run.

Worth mentioning that was Freddie Freeman with the big league takeout slide at second. Sometimes those make all the difference in a tightly contested game.

Alex White's Line: 4 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 0 K, 71 pitches (32 strikes)

That ball-strike ratio is embarrassing. I will argue forever the four-man rotation/pitch count that is now strictly a pitch count is doing no good for the Rockies young pitchers, but it's also past time for Alex White to start throwing strikes consistently. You can't trust a pitcher in any type of role if they aren't throwing strikes. That goes for any level of play.

Rock Solid Recap: Rockies Bats, Bullpen Carry The Load

Rockies 6, Braves 0 (boxscore)

Winning Players: The Bullpen 6 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 K

Another dominant performance from the Rockies bullpen with Carlos Torres leading the way again in the piggyback role. He allowed three hits over three innings while striking out three and continues to be, along with Adam Ottavino, the most pleasure surprises on the pitching side this season. Torres then gave way to Rex Brothers, who was flat filthy in two innings, striking out four and walking one. Matt Belisle put the finishing touches on Atlanta with a strong 9th.

Dominant.

Turning Point: Well, since only one team scored, I'd say the first run of the game was very important. That was produced by the bat of Carlos Gonzalez, who connected for his 22nd home run.

One inning later, Jordan Pacheco would hit his 4th of the season to make it 2-0. That was also very important.

Then again, you could easily argue the disastrous double play that killed a potential rally for Atlanta in the 6th inning was the most important of all important plays.

I think Fredi Gonzalez stole a page from the Jim Tracy playbook with that call. What in the blue hell was he thinking?

Rock Solid Recrap: Labor Day Circus

Braves 6, Rockies 1 (boxscore)

What Went Wrong: Geez, I know it was a quick turn around and all but did the Rockies not get any sleep on the plane or at the hotel overnight? Just take a look at some of the crap they served up this afternoon

That was just the 1st inning. How about the 3rd?

Been awhile (couple weeks anyway) since I've had full blown circus music playing in my head while watching the Rockies. As catchy as that can be, I'd much rather have a Justin Bieber song in my head.

Turning Point: The Rockies - a professional baseball team - didn't show up ready to play. No turning point, just several embarrassing ones.

Tyler Chatwood's Line: 3 IP, 6 R (5 ER), 2 H, 5 BB, 2 K, 74 pitches (41 strikes)

Walks, wild pitches, errors and other defensive miscues defined Chatwood's outing today. I mean just look at the run column and then look at the hit column. I haven't seen anything like that since high school. Or maybe it was Little League. Regardless of the embarrassing defense behind him, Chatwood beat himself today, plain and simple, and needs to start throw strikes consistently, not three out of every five starts.

Rock Solid Recrap: Same Starting Pitching. Less Offense. More Bad Results.

Braves 7, Rockies 2 (boxscore)

What Went Wrong: At the risk of becoming repetitive, I will skip this section. You already know.

Turning Point: Two up, two down for Juan Nicasio to start the 3rd inning.

Three batters later. Three-run home run Freddie Freeman. 3-0 Braves.

I've said it repeatedly in these Recraps, Rockies pitchers must become stronger finishers. That doesn't mean throwing 95-97 in the 7th-8th innings, either. That means throwing quality pitches with two strikes and/or two outs to finish off hitters and close down innings. They have to be the absolute worst at this in baseball, and it seems to cost them every single time an inning is extended.

It's how you lose close games. It's how you blow big leads. It's how you lose games before they're even started. It's losing baseball.

Make some damn pitches and let the offense do work.

Juan Nicasio's Line: 5 IP, 6 ER, 8 H, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 93 pitches (49 strikes)

Not the outing Colorado needed from Nicasio. Not enough strikes. Not enough outs. Just not enough. But I won't come down too hard on him individually. He's carried a heavy load so far and I expect much better his next time out.

Meanwhile, Adam Ottavino made his Rockies debut and tossed two completely perfect innings this afternoon. Carlos Torres then threw a perfect 9th after throwing a perfect 8th last night.

You know what was really cool about those four innings?

47 total pitches, 33 strikes.

Lineup Card: Rockies vs Braves 5-6-12

Saturday Night's Recrap (if you can stomach it): Pitching Continues Circling The Drain

Lineups

Colorado Rockies (12-14)
  1. Marco Scutaro (2B)
  2. Jonathan Herrera (3B)
  3. Carlos Gonzalez (LF)
  4. Troy Tulowitzki (SS)
  5. Jason Giambi (1B)
  6. Michael Cuddyer (RF)
  7. Ramon Hernandez (C)
  8. Dexter Fowler (CF)
  9. Juan Nicasio (P)
I think Jim Tracy got the memo on his Sunday lineups. He'll never admit that, of course, but they have definitely improved since he commented on them a couple weeks back.

Atlanta Braves (17-11)
  1. Michael Bourn (CF)
  2. Martin Prado (LF)
  3. Freddie Freeman (1B)
  4. Dan Uggla (2B)
  5. Jason Heyward (RF)
  6. Juan Francisco (3B)
  7. David Ross (C)
  8. Tyler Pastornicky (SS)
  9. Brandon Beachy (P)
No Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, Eric Hinske or Matt Diaz? So, you're saying there's a chance? Or are they all going to show up in the later innings to destroy our weekend?

Don't answer that.

Rock Solid Recrap: Pitching Continues Circling The Drain

First are foremost, my thoughts are with the fan who was struck by Tyler Pastornicky's foul ball during tonight's game. That was a really, really scary incident. Hopefully the reports we hear continue to be positive.

Braves 13, Rockies 9 (boxscore)

What Went Wrong: There's a reason I listed flawed and frustrating ahead of fun when describing the Rockies the other day. The current starting rotation is flawed to the point of giving Colorado absolutely no chance 3 1/2 times out of five. Just a miserable, embarrassing mess. And we're already seeing the wear and tear that's taken on the bullpen leading to awful results in the later innings, almost to the point of total predictability.

Yes, everybody knew coming in that this possibility existed, but not to the point we've seen over the past 10 days. This is a quagmire. A total cesspool of incompetence on several levels.

Point at Bob Apodaca. Point at Dan O'Dowd. Point at Jim Tracy. Point at Esmil Rogers, Edgmer Escalona, Guillermo Moscoso, Jhoulys Chacin, Rex Brothers, Jeremy Guthrie's bike.

Point at everybody and everything. You won't be wrong. And assuming things continue as they are (or at least close to it), a lot of those names — player or otherwise — will soon be erased from the Rockies official roster.

They'll have no choice. You can't continue fielding a pitching staff that has 4-5 big league arms at best. You can't continue making excuses for those who field that roster, fail to provide depth, or fail to mold those fringe arms into usable talent.

To quote Jim Tracy... "You just can't."

Oh, and did I mention you can also point at the awful defense? How about four more errors tonight — Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, Esmil Rogers and Tyler Colvin. That should keep their spot as the worst defensive team in baseball pretty secure.

Lineup Card: Rockies vs Braves 5-5-12

Rockies Roster Moves

Recalled: INF/C Jordan Pacheco and RHP Adam Ottavino (to occupy a spot in the bullpen for a couple days)

Optioned: RHP Guillermo Moscoso (Because duh)

Bereavement List: OF Eric Young Jr. (We send our best wishes to EY at this time)

Lineups

Colorado Rockies (12-13)
  1. Marco Scutaro (2B)
  2. Dexter Fowler (CF)
  3. Carlos Gonzalez (LF)
  4. Troy Tulowitzki (SS)
  5. Todd Helton (1B)
  6. Michael Cuddyer (RF)
  7. Wilin Rosario (C)
  8. Chris Nelson (3B)
  9. Jamie Moyer (P)
Wilin Rosario and Chris Nelson get starts tonight against left-hander Mike Minor. That means Dexter Fowler moves back up to the second spot in the order.

Atlanta Braves (16-11)
  1. Michael Bourn (CF)
  2. Chipper Jones (3B)
  3. Freddie Freeman (1B)
  4. Brian McCann (C)
  5. Dan Uggla (2B)
  6. Matt Diaz (RF)
  7. Jason Heyward (RF)
  8. Tyler Pastornicky (SS)
  9. Mike Minor (P)
This is an even tougher lineup tonight for Jamie Moyer to deal with after the additions of Matt Diaz and impressive rookie Tyler Pastornicky.

After last night's miserable outing from Guillermo Moscoso, coupled with the game going a couple extra frames, there's pressure on Moyer to again to go at least six innings against this starting nine. If I were a betting man, I'd unfortunately have to take the under.

Rock Solid Recrap: Colorado Springs Shuttle Gaining Occupants

Braves 9, Rockies 8 in 11 innings (boxscore)

What Went Wrong: Staked to a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning, Guillermo Moscoso managed to give it all back, plus one, in less than five innings of work.

Guillermo Moscoso's Line: 4 1/3, 6 ER, 7 H, 3 BB (felt like 30), 5 K, 1 HR, 83 pitches (43 strikes)

Needless to say he did not take advantage of his second start with this awful line, and will soon be heading south to Colorado Springs to join Jhoulys Chacin. Not a lot more needs to be said about it. Thanks for playing, Guillermo.

Oh, wait, don't leave just yet. Make some room for Edgmer Escalona on the Colorado Springs Shuttle. The Rockies right-handed reliever — who always seems to find himself pitching in a critical situation —took his first official loss of the year after allowing the game-winning two-run homer to Eric Hinske in the 11th. He now sports a 10.13 ERA in six appearances.

Matt Reynolds (he can stay) was also less than stellar in relief of Moscoso (1 2/3, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Had he been able to shut down Atlanta's rally in the 5th, or even just pitched a clean 6th, it could have been the turning point the Rockies needed to get this win.

Instead...

Turning Point #1: Trailing 5-2, Michael Bourn lays down a bunt with one out in the 5th inning. Originally it's ruled fair, with Ramon Hernandez picking the ball up and tagging Bourn out. After a discussion with the rest of his umpiring crew (or maybe it just took three minutes to register), Tim McClelland then changes his call to a foul ball. Bourn's at-bat continues, he singles, Moscoso, who was walking the razor's edge without any assistance, promptly implodes. Braves leave the inning leading 6-5.

Good call or not, which I think it was, you just can't let an inning get away like that.

Lineup Card: Rockies vs Braves 5-4-12

Lineups

Colorado Rockies (12-12)

  1. Marco Scutaro (2B)
  2. Jonathan Herrera (3B)
  3. Carlos Gonzalez (LF)
  4. Troy Tulowitzki (SS)
  5. Todd Helton (1B)
  6. Michael Cuddyer (RF)
  7. Ramon Hernandez (C)
  8. Dexter Fowler (CF)
  9. Guillermo Moscoso (P)
I honestly think Dexter Fowler has done enough of late to earn staying at the top of the order. Apparently Jim Tracy disagrees, as he appears locked in to having Herrera hitting first or second whenever he starts.

Roster Note: Reliever Carlos Torres was recalled this afternoon to take the roster spot of Jhoulys Chacin. His stay is likely to be a brief one as the Rockies need to bring up a starter for Monday night's game in San Diego.

Atlanta Braves (15-11)
  1. Michael Bourn (CF)
  2. Chipper Jones (3B)
  3. Freddie Freeman (1B)
  4. Brian McCann (C)
  5. Dan Uggla (2B)
  6. Jason Heyward (RF)
  7. Eric Hinske (LF)
  8. Jack Wilson (SS)
  9. Tim Hudson (P)
This is a damn good Braves team that presents just as big a challenge to the Rockies as I felt Los Angeles did earlier in the week. And that might be really good news considering the Rockies have stepped up and played well against their more difficult opponents this season, while too often giving games away to the lesser competition.

We'll see how it plays out tonight. It's also a big night for Guillermo Moscoso. There may be a temporary rotation slot there for his taking if he impresses against a strong lineup.

Rock Solid Recap: Flawed, Frustrating and Fun. Our 2012 Rockies!

It's May 2nd and I'm already worried about making it through this season alive. The 2012 Rockies simply won't quit, but they refuse to make it easy, and because of that it looks like we as fans will be put through the wringer day in and day out.

They're going to drive us crazy. They're going to give us headaches. But what makes it all OK at the end day is that they're going to entertain us. And for that, I think it's time we all embrace them for what they are and see how long can hold up.

I'm giving myself until the 4th of July.

Rockies 8, Dodgers 5 (boxscore)

Winning Player: Oh, let's see here, how about Carlos Gonzalez?

Gonzalez added two more big bombs to his total today — off the defending Cy Young who's also left-handed — giving him seven homers in his last nine games. Over that same stretch CarGo is 16-for-34 with 16 RBI and 5 BB. He's absolutely sizzling right now and there should be no end in sight as long as he remains selective (aka swings at strikes).

Wilin Rosario also added a home run off Kershaw, making this the first three home run game he's allowed according to Dodgers Thoughts.

Turning Point: Great starting pitching meant it was the bullpens turn to stink today, and that's what they — Rex Brothers and Rafael Betancourt — did, blowing 2-1 and 5-3 leads respectively in the 8th and 9th innings.

But it was after that Dodgers rally in the 8th — Damn Hairstons! — that the Rockies immediately went to work themselves against Kershaw. Marco Scutaro led if off with a single. Jonathan Herrera bunted him over. Then Dexter Fowler got Scutaro home with his own single to center. Those three hitters set the stage for CarGo's second blast and that sequence is what set the Rockies up to win this baseball game.

Rock Solid Recrap: Rockies lay another egg on getaway day

Just a wonderful game all the way with around with solid pitching, exceptional defense, and maybe not the most explosive offensive effort, but an exhilarating one thanks to Carlos Gonzalez's walk-off single.

Oh, sorry, that was the opening to Wednesday's Recap.

Different story for Thursday. What an absolutely miserable performance by a team that desperately needed to lock up a winning series and a winning home stand.

Braves 9, Rockies 6 (boxscore)

And it starts with Jhoulys Chacin. This isn't the first time I've gone into a series finale feeling good about the Rockies chances based solely on Chacin being the starting pitcher. It's also not the first time Chacin has let me down. The other time that stands out was a the one-game thing in Chicago, which was the final game of a three-game set in April.

He was terrible that day. He was terrible again here, walking SEVEN and allowing five earned runs over 4 2/3.

But as maddening as that is, I have to check myself before getting too annoyed. At 23, Chacin is still going through the normal ups and downs, ebbs and flows of your typical young pitcher. It's all a part of the process.

Rock Solid Recap: A wonderful Wednesday winner

I have to be honest with you to start out. On the heels of what I wrote after both Monday and Tuesday's games, Wednesday night's victory may have been the most encouraging and enjoyable win since the two-game home sweep against San Francisco.

Just a wonderful game all the way with around with solid pitching, exceptional defense, and maybe not the most explosive offensive effort, but an exhilarating one thanks to Carlos Gonzalez's walk-off single.

Rockies 3, Braves 2 (boxscore)

Juan Nicasio

That was so damned impressive. Battling the same team that lit him up at Turner Field just two weeks ago, Nicasio came back with a better game plan or better execution of a similar game plan. It was tough to tell which it was because that last start didn't last long enough. Bottom line though, Nicasio stepped up and delivered another gem.

Final line: 7 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 4 K

The only real problem for Nicasio was his fielding error in the 6th, which was followed a double. This all with no one out. But thanks to a couple nice pitches and some really stellar from his infield, he was able to get safely to the dugout. He then finished STRONG with a 1-2-3, two strikeout 7th.

Lineup Card: 7-20-11 Rockies vs Brewers

If you're looking for Rockies game lineups and you don't feel like searching all over Twitter or waiting for MLB.com to post them, check back to Heaven & Helton about 30-60 minutes before first pitch. They should be here waiting for you.

We're back after two days in Iowa. Did you miss us?

Colorado Rockies (46-51)
  1. LF Carlos Gonzalez
  2. 2B Mark Ellis
  3. 1B Todd Helton

  6. C   Eliezer Alfonzo
  7. 3B Ian Stewart
  8. CF Dexter Fowler
  9. P   Juan Nicascio
Jim Tracy won't bat Chris Iannetta higher than 7th, but Eliezer Alfonzo can hit 6th? Our manager is so freaking weird.

Rock Solid Recap: So now the offense finally likes Ubaldo

Rockies 12, Braves 3 (boxscore)

If Dan O'Dowd had known a few trade rumors would make the Rockies offense appreciate and support Ubaldo Jimenez more, he probably would have floated his name out there around last season's deadline.

For like 20-25 starts dating back to that time, the Rockies weren't there for him. The last two starts... 24 runs.

Yeah, now you care. You hear a few scouts are in the crowd, and now you want to be his friend again. Figures.

But seriously, a kick ass performance by the offense. They attacked a young pitcher that has been on a roll, shook him up, worked him over and never let him get off the mat. A relentless effort that I honestly expected to see happen a lot more often this season. Maybe not to the point of 12 runs night after night, but they let so many pitchers off the hook that they could have eaten alive.

Breaking: Not only were there scouts in attendance for Ubaldo's start tonight, I heard they were writing things down on paper. What could this development mean??

Rock Solid Recrap: Rockies dismantled, pantsed and swept by Braves

Braves 6, Rockies 3 (boxscore)

Now see, that's how you take care of business and finish off a sweep. You think the Atlanta Braves cared that the Rockies are short-handed and hurting? No chance. That's a talented, driven, ruthless and scary good baseball team they've put together there. Damn good team.

It's a good lineup. Don't care how much they've struggled to this point, the process of coming together has already begun. They will score runs. The rotation speaks for itself. And the back end of the bullpen is shutdown quality.

But like I said, I'm most impressed with how they took care of business on the field. They took charge of every game, stepped on the Rockies throat and never once let them up. Rockies could learn from that... if they ever get healthy again.

Juan Nicasio

The good and the bad. We've documentated after every start that there's going to be a lot of both. Today was a perfect example. Two good innings, then the wheels just fall off. Learning how to navigate his way through those tough innings is always a difficult hurdle in any pitcher's development. Just look at Ubaldo, Hammel, De La Rosa - all of those guys struggled to get past the killer inning. Once they did, they realized their varying levels of potential.

Rock Solid Recrap: Cooked

Braves 9, Rockies 1 (boxscore)

Aaron Cook

Terrible first inning. Bounce back second inning. Relapse third inning. Settles down in the fourth and fifth. Runs into trouble and exits immediately in the sixth. That's how you sum up Aaron Cook's start tonight, which feels pretty close to the pattern he's used since his return from the DL.

Maybe I should compliment his consistency. Or maybe I should add my name to the list of folks who are ready to cut ties with Cookie. It feels like the right thing to do, but the Rockies are in a tough predicament. I don't just mean from a loyalty standpoint. In fact, that's never seemed like an issue for them.

Financially and logistically it's tough to just let him go. I mean yes, chances are Cook won't be able to rehab his value to the point they can move him without taking a big hit, but it's not like the Rockies have another pitcher or two beating down the door to the Majors. They don't. They have Clayton Mortensen, Greg Reynolds and maybe Esmil Rogers. If there's no real clear upgrade to make, sticking with Cook might not be their worst option.

That said, it's possible he's gone tomorrow. It's possible he's gone during the AS break. It's possible he's here all season. I don't know what they're going to do, but I can see why they have and possibly could continue to give him chances. It might not help them, but it might be a "risk" worth taking if he figures something (anything) out.

Lineup Card: 7-6-11 Rockies @ Braves

Rock Solid Recrap: Chacin gives Braves free pass to victory

Braves 5, Rockies 3 (boxscore)

Jhoulys Chacin: "And another walk. Make that six."

Not exactly word for word what Drew Goodman said, but close enough. Six walks is too many folks. Unless you're Ubaldo Jimenez and you're not allowing hits. Unfortunately, Chacin wasn't that good tonight. And he found out the hard way that when you walk six, it allows something fluky like Derek Lowe ripping a double into the left field corner to not only be embarrassing, but something that completely changes the game.

Afterwards Chacin said he felt too strong coming into the game, which caused him to overthrow and miss his spots. I hope that's all it is. When you see a guy that was cruising along so easily for three months just suddenly lose it, and then you hear about the forearm... I'll take his word for it, but I'm still crossing my fingers.

Chris Iannetta: The best of both worlds. One time he goes up there, works a count and delivers the big RBI single.

Next time: 2nd and 3rd, one out. He ****ing stands there and looks at three strikes. Inexcusable. I don't care if strike three looked or was outside. Boohoo. They were all strikes the entire game. He should have known that and he should have been looking to drive a run in. Terrible is the only word I can think of to describe it.

Lineup Card: 7-5-11 Rockies @ Braves
